Gaining strong momentum in 2005 after doing 74 dates across the US — including tours with members of the Wu-Tang Clan, R.A. the Rugged Man, and OneBeLo and dates with names like
Aesop Rock and KRS One — iCON the Mic King aka Mic K!ng garnered attention from Uprising Records.
In late February of 2006 he signed a genre-defying multi-album deal with the respected indie rock label.
With the release of his first record with Uprising on the horizon iCON has assembled a team of skilled and explosive performers to accompany him on a 30-date tour in promotion of the “Mike and the Fatman” LP (a collaborative effort between Mic K!ng and Demigodz producer Chum the Skrilla Guerilla).
As one of our generation’s last poignant wordsmiths North Philadelphia’s Mic K!ngis a legend in the making the retired emcee battle champion continues to spread his gospel with strong DIY ethics in a time where our genres luminaries are force-fed to us by intense marketing and promotion rather than actual talent.
After finally poking his head through independent hiphop’s glass ceiling with his 12″ release ‘IndieInBurns on Third Earth Music (featuring guest vocals from Def Jux’s C-Rayz Walz and production from Aesop Rock/Ninja Tune beatsmith Blockhead) Mic K!NG released a limited edition EP entitled “Intricate Spectrum” and continues to tour the planet until the legions awaken from their slumber and recognize what they’ve been missing is right under their nose. A child of WuTang Clan, Pharoaphe Monch, and the Lyricist Lounge era the Mic King combines immense lyrical prowess with upper echelon song-making ability and a stage show that’s left spectators from Philly to Sydney, Australia in awe.
In a time when the game is so stiff that nine out of ten doctors would diagnose hip hop with rigor mortis, underground workhorses MiC K!NG (a/k/a iCON the Mic King) and Chum (f/k/a Chum the Skrilla Guerilla) have once again teamed together to smash all preconceived notions under the guise of their newly christened duo Cool-Aide’s debut project, Flavor Ade.
While neither half of Cool-Aide is a new-jack by any means, Flavor Ade is bursting at the seams with an exuberance that feels like the start of a new beginning.
Channeling the skills he honed throughout the years as a champion battle rapper and mind-boggling live performer, MiC K!NG effortlessly demonstrates his verbal gymnastics throughout the record, making it pretty damn difficult to dispute his self-designated title of “Best Rapper Ever.”
As fans of his work as head producer for CT crew Demigodz will attest to, Chum is no slouch on the beats, either. Powered by his deftly versatile production that runs the gamut from boom bap to synth-addled house to new jack swing (yep, that’s right, new jack swing), the duo speeds through an lively rollercoaster of genre-shifting, up-tempo madness, without ever sounding out of their element. And they’re joined by a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the underground, with guest appearances by Slug of Atmosphere, Slum Village’s elZHi, and Philadelphia’s best kept secret, Has-Lo.

La troisième chose qu’il faut savoir sur MiC K!NG, c’est que c’est un Freestyler dangereux.
La quatrième chose qu’il faut savoir sur MiC K!NG, c’est qu’il Freestyle sur quoi que ce soit que quiconque lui mettra dans la main.
Enfin, la cinquième chose qu’il faut savoir sur MiC K!NG, c’est que c’est un Fighter dangereux, en ce sens qu’il freestyle sur lesdits objets.., LES YEUX BANDÉS.
C’est sa signature.
Elle est unique en terme d’EXCELLENCE.
Déjà réalisée, souvent copiée, jamais égalée.

iCON The Mic King aka MiC K!NG, né Michael King, bientôt 27 ans, est originaire de Philadelphie.
Trop jeune pour prétendre au titre d’excellence? Simple question de potentiel, hors propos!
Ses débuts officiels datent de 2005. Il part en tournée, 74 dates à travers les États-Unis, avec entre autres des membres du Wu Tang Clan, R.A. The Rugged Man et One Be Lo. Il aura également été présent à l’occasion de représentations avec KRS One et Aesop Rock, à la même période.
C’est ainsi que, fort de ses performances spectaculaires, il gagne l’attention d’un label de rock indépendant, Uprising Records. Il signera son contrat avec eux en 2006, contrat fort confortable en terme de liberté artistique et nombre de réalisation d’albums. Dès lors, après la sortie de «Mike and The Fat Man», un opus en duo avec Demigodz produit par Chum The Skrilla Guerilla, et sur lequel on retrouve également un featuring de Killah Priest et Blue Raspberry, c’est de sa propre tournée promotionnelle dont il s’agit, soit 30 dates.
Pour être un MC d’exception, MiC K!NG jouit à ce jour, et depuis ses premiers exploits, d’une réputation inébranlable, exempte de quelconque coup de pouce médiatique, encore moins d’aide d’industriels influents, ces Bonshommes qui vous propulsent un bon à rien au top des charts en un clin oeil, à coup d’encre sur des chèques aux multiples zéro derrière le point.
Corruption, manipulation, argent roi? M’enfin, un peu de respect!
Des MC comme C-Rayz Walz, autre redoutable freestyler, membre officiel du très fermé Fight Club, ont eu vite fait de s’acoquiner avec iCON The Mic King.
Ainsi libre de ses choix, c’est sur le label Third Earth Music qu’il sortira le 12” «IndieInBurns», où le nommé C-Rayz Walz est en featuring, Aesop Rock (collègue de C.R.W., chez Definitive Jux) y étant lui à la production avec Blockhead, du label Ninja Tune.
Des partenariats de références qui parlent d’eux-mêmes.
S’en sera suivi un EP en édition limitée, «Intricate Spectrum»
Boulimique de prestations, iCON ne s’arrête jamais, d’autres collaborations se produisent ponctuellement, de façon non officielle.
Son public il le conquiert sans contestation partout où il va, des USA à l’Australie en passant par quelques pays de notre Communauté Européenne.
Dès lors qu’il peut exprimer son talent, notre dangereux fighter répond présent…
A l’occasion de sa troisième venue en France en juin 2008, accompagné de Lord Faz, où il aura fait 6 dates en 8 jours, Mike, au gré d’une promenade, nous aura surpris à aller saluer des étrangers en plein pique nique estivale sur les quais à Paris, enthousiaste au possible à partager sa passion avec d’autres, A PRIORI dans différents courants musicaux.
D’abord surpris par l’imposture, les badauds seront finalement restés admiratifs devant le jeune américain qui, ses yeux bandés naturellement, les aura spontanément divertis avec leurs objets personnels entre les mains.
Aux oubliettes sceaux à champagne, vins rosés, fromages et charcuterie!
Il en est des anecdotes…
Enfant prodige, c’est rien de le dire.
On associe bien volontiers son nom à d’autres tels que les membres du Wu Tang Clan, Pharoahe Monch, ou encore du Lyricist Lounge, en tant que teneur du flambeau de la descendance représentative de ces aînés, figures mythiques dans la sphère Hip Hop.
